There are three different types of weight loss surgeries namely, Lap band surgery, Gastric bypass surgery and Body lift. Lap band surgery involves placing of an adjustable ring around the upper third portion of the stomach. The ring reduces your appetite and initiates the process of weight loss by closing off part of your stomach, making a small pouch which can hold only 30 ml of food. Ultimately, this results in less eating because that is all your stomach can hold. Lap band surgery is less invasive since it is a laparoscopic treatment. There is very little scarring since small keyhole incisions is made.
Gastric bypass surgery involves the stapling of your stomach to form a small pouch. A section of your intestines is attached to the pouch, which means the remainder of the intestines and the stomach are being bypassed. The intestines and stomach are no longer part of your digestive tract and your stomach can hold only a small portion of food. The patients feel full quicker which results in the absorption of less calories.
Body lift is another method of weight loss surgery. It is an excellent method to contour your thighs, abdomen and buttocks after massive weight loss, or addressing the normal effects of childbearing or aging. The body lift is also known as lower body lift which improves the appearance of the thighs, abdomen and buttocks. The operation is normally performed to remove excess fat and skin following massive weight loss. It can also be performed to fight the effects of child bearing, aging, excess skin, sagging fatty tissue and cellulite.
Recovery times are different for Lap band surgery and Gastric bypass surgery. Lap band patients can return to their homes the same day, whereas Gastric bypass patients can only return after 2 to 3 days of their surgery. Lap band patients experience a gradual weight loss, which is quite effective in preventing malnutrition. The average weight loss is around 1 to 2 pounds per week whereas the weight loss in Gastric bypass patients is a bit faster. The Lap band is removable at any time and the stomach is usually restored to their original state and function.
